Spin welding is a leak-free welding technique for adding permanent fittings and ports to rotomolded tanks. First, a hole is drilled in the thermoplastic tank. A fitting made of the same material is then inserted. Next, a router spins at high speeds until melting or fusion occurs. Applications for this high-speed plastic welding process include water tanks, wastewater tanks, and liquid storage tanks.

Gregstrom Corporation provides rotational molding and plastic finishing services to plastic tank manufacturers. Whether you need to meet NSF, USDA, or other standards, we’re ready to help. Keep reading to learn more and contact us to discuss your project.

Why Use Spin Welding in Rotational Molding?

There are three main benefits.

#1 Speed and Cost

Traditional joining methods like adhesives and fasteners can extend product assembly times and increase labor and material costs. Spin welding creates seamless, permanent bonds that are quick and cost-effective to produce.

#2 Strength and Leak Resistance

Rotational molding is ideal for creating strong, hollow products like plastic tanks. However, adhesives and fasteners can introduce weak points that raise the risk of leaks – or even tank failure. Spin welding creates watertight joints that can withstand pressure fluctuations.

#3 Design Flexibility

Spin welding allows designers to integrate components such as threaded fittings, fine molded-in threads, or structural reinforcements without compromising design for manufacturability (DFM). Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), two commonly used rotomolding materials, both support this joining process.
